ABSTRACT
The performance of the machine tools meant for
carrying out precision machining greatly depends
upon the vibration free cutting processes. The
machine tools, with passage of time develop
certain inaccuracies in the assembly, i.e.
distortions. These greatly affect quality of
machining/manufacturing. It is extremely
necessary to know the rate at which these
discrepancies occur in the machine tool. This can
easily be achieved by continuous monitoring of
the vibrations on the machine tool. Vibrations are
caused by number of factors such as worn out
bearings, development of distortions, gradual
degradation of the joint between the machine tool
and the foundation etc. The paper describes the
method by which the degradation of the assembly
of the machine could be judged. In this method,
vibrations are continuously monitored and their
trend over a period of time is received. This
monitoring comprises of not only monitoring the
overall levels of vibration but also the changes
that occur in the spectral components of the
vibration. Each of the spectral components is
identifiable to a known malfunction in the system.
Thus by monitoring the vibration levels and
changes that occur in the spectral component, one
can find out rate at which machine tool will
deteriorate. Such analysis can give early warnings
for timely maintenance of the machine tool. The
paper describes vibration monitoring as a very
powerful tool for monitoring the health of
precision machine tool.

CONCLUSIONS
The degradation in performance of machine tool
can be judged by scientific vibration analysis of
machine tool. Appropriately selected condition
monitoring system can detect presence of
perturbation forces, which cause damages to
machine parts. Using Accelerometer as a basic
transducer for condition monitoring and probes
for shaft vibration, vibration behavior of machine
tool can be known. Then using vibration spectrum
analysis, known malfunction can be found, which
gives early warning of deterioration in machine
tool and will avoid breakdowns. At this time
suitable repair/maintenance will maintain the
quality of machining as well as good health of
precision machine tool.
